SEGMENTATION

OAC - OUTPUT AREA CLASSIFICATION

at the request of Members of the OAC User Group

One of the key benefits of a detailed database, with an efficient analysis system, is the ability to look at the differences between different 'segments' of the population.

At the most simple levels, these can be purely 'Gender Segmentation' (Males and Females), or Age Groups, Marital Status etc. and these segmentations can easily be created within the DataTalk Explorer, including mixed, and multiple level, personalised models.

However, over the years a number of highly detailed, and professional, GeoDemographic Segmentation Models have been developed to assist in understanding and interpreting major sets of data, and they are commonly used in both Academic and Commercial data analysis.

The British Population Survey now includes a selection of some of the best Segmentation Models available, to assist a wide variety of our Data Users. The models included in our Surveys are listed on this page, together with their designer / source and links to the relevant websites for access to their background, rationale and detailed segment descriptions. (Click on the name.)

To further assist Users we have created an Appendix to the Data Catalogue, listing the Segmentation Models, and all their sub-groups, as they appear within the British Population Survey. Copies of this Appendix can be downloaded by clicking on the button
